Before the Claddagh, there was the Mani in Fede. Look closely at this ring and you will see two clasped hands; a symbol of unity and affection. Two hands clasped in faith to indicate closeness and love that can never be pulled apart. Clasped hands in the form of a ring originated centuries ago and were particularly popular in Roman times and during the Medieval period. Both men and women wore these rings and gave them as love tokens or signs of loyalty and friendship.

Sometimes called fede, Hand-in-Hand, Hands in Trust or Faith rings, they have appeared all over Europe and are also thought to be the predecessor to the Irish Claddagh rings (also pictured beside the Clasped Hands ring).
