Key Keepsakes and Jewellery

Why are keys such a popular jewellery design? Key shaped pendants or keepsakes have traditionally been given to celebrate the "coming of age"; the transition into adulthood. In the past the symbolic key represented the fact that the Birthday Boy or Girl was finally a grown-up member of the household with their own key to the door so they could come and go as they pleased.

Remember the catchy ditty; "21 today, 21 today. You've got the key to the door, never been 21 before"?

These days, keys are given for both twenty-first and eighteenth birthdays, but they are also given for other occasions.  In fact, there are so many reasons to give a meaningful key gift perhaps we should say "Key-psakes"?

While the shape of actual keys may have changed over the years, traditionally shaped key in sterling silver or solid gold remain the favoured style for jewellery and are well loved, timeless jewellery pieces.
